Support Group Meeting – 11 Jan 2020

BTSS first support group meeting for 2020 saw a larger than expected turn out that we had to move to the open space outside our normal meeting room.
After a robust discussion about diet and coping with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, attendees were excited to hear from BTSS President about the new treatment options that will soon be available for GBM patients.
The meeting closed with several members signing up for the telephone support groups that BTSS will be implementing in February.  Please call BTSS office if you would like to be included in our new telephone support groups that will connect and support homebound patients and caregivers on a fortnightly basis.

BTSS Christmas Party 2019

BTSS Christmas Party 2019 was a joyous occasion which saw a record turnout of more than 100 beneficiaries, volunteers and friends at KKH Staff Lounge on 14 Dec 2019. From 9 am, enthusiastic volunteers put up decorations and set up the tables and presents. We had 2 parallel events running – a children’s party that was led by the amazing volunteers from the NUS Community Service Club and the other by energetic Karishma who soon had everyone engaged and laughing together.  A big THANK YOU to Disney Singapore for the generous donation of merchandise.  Each child went home happily with a bag of surprises!  Special thanks to Smyth, Nam and some volunteers who blessed gifts for everyone, including delicious home-baked cookies.   It is so wonderful to see our BTSS family growing in size and even closer to each other as we work together on various programmes and advocacy projects for the betterment of our community.

Christmas Shopping with Morgan Stanley – 6 Dec 2019

The season of love and giving came early for 20 BTSS pediatric beneficiaries on 6th December. Volunteers from our corporate sponsor Morgan Stanley spent an afternoon playing Santa Claus and Santarina when they brought their young charge Christmas shopping at Vivocity. Each volunteer was paired with a beneficiary. Though it was the first time meeting the beneficiaries, the enthusiastic volunteers quickly won over the hearts of our beneficiaries. Knowing that their children were in good hands, our parents were able to relax during the shopping session. Faces of our kids beamed with delight as the volunteers indulged in their wishes. The group proceeded to Pizza Hut for food and drinks after the shopping. It was such a joy to see our beneficiaries interacting with the volunteers and amongst themselves. We hope the volunteers enjoyed themselves as much as our beneficiaries did. Thank you Morgan Stanley for spreading the Christmas cheer to us!

NUSSCSC Grant A Wish – 26 Oct 2019

Our kids met up for the second time with the student volunteers from NUS Students’ Community Club Service for the wish engagement activities at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital on 26 Oct 2019.  Despite the air conditioning system not working at the Staff Lounge, the kids had fun engaging in craft activities where they made gifts for children from another organisation.  To give is always a blessing which we hope our kids will learn to appreciate.

The finale of this program will happen on 14 December, which is also our Christmas Party!  Watch out for the announcement!

BTSS Tuition Programme

The school year is almost coming to an end, and the weekly group tuition has been concluded. We would like to express our gratitude to Yicheng, Terynn, Jaycinth, Bryan and Sean from Hwa Chong Institution for putting others above themselves to tutor our BTSS kids over the last few months. Having these big brothers and sisters to look up upon, our young beneficiaries had enjoyed the learning journey even more.
We would be back with a tuition program for our BT kids in 2020. Brain tumour kids who are keen to join our programmes should contact our office at admin@braintumoursociety.org.sg for information and arrangements.

Miss World Singapore Coronation Night

Lights!Cameras!Action! It was a starry night on 19 Oct as 13 of our beneficiaries were invited to the coronation night of Miss World Singapore at MediaCorp Studio. BTSS is adopted as the charity for Miss World Singapore’s Beauty with a Purpose program. Watching the event live, our beneficiaries had a chance to glimpse behind the scenes, and went home understanding how the Beauty with a Purpose program has raised funds for disadvantaged people all over the world since it’s inception in 1972. Thank you Celebrity Group for adopting BTSS as the charity for Miss World Singapore 2019.

Lim Boon Keng The Musical

Our beneficiaries were in for a sensory treat over the period 10-13 Oct 2019 as they were treated to the first ever musical on Lim Boon Keng staged at Victoria Theatre.  This was brought to us by the good people of Musical Theatre Limited.  A BIG Thank You to you MTL!  For some of us, it was the first time experiencing a musical, and for all, a wonderful feast for the eyes, ears and souls.  Such was the power of the musical that had a young active beneficiary sitting still for a full 70 minutes!  Therapy can indeed come in different forms, so thank you again MTL for the blessings you gave to our beneficiaries!

BTSS Children’s Day 2019

On 6 Oct 2019, BTSS celebrated with our wonderful pediatric beneficiaries and their families at the NUS Guild House.  A big group of 45 beneficiaries from 14 families started with a yummy lunch followed by a fun and interesting workshop with the NUS Students’ Community Service Club volunteers.  While the kids were well engaged, parents gathered in a round table fashion to discuss concerns about their kids’ treatments, schooling and future.  What better way to end the day than treating the kids to an old school type of carnival!  The kids had fun playing carnival games and munching on snacks!  Yuan Lin, our beneficiary, even walked off with the third prize at the lucky draw!  BTSS would like to thank the students from NUSSCS for inviting our children in their “Grant A Wish XVII” activity.

BTSS UPDATES (27 Jun 2019)

Dear BTSS Family,

I am pleased to inform you of the following updates on our mission to become an Institute of Public Character (IPC) organisation.

1. Change in entity structure

On 18 April 2019, BTSS took our first step towards IPC by successfully converting from a society to a public company limited by guarantee (CLG).  We are now officially known as Brain Tumour Society (Singapore) Limited. As a CLG, our entity is considered to have a separate legal entity and distinct from its members.  This means that a CLG may sue or be sued in its own name, and the members of the CLG will be protected from any liabilities incurred by the CLG.

As members of our old entity (Brain Tumour Society (Singapore)), you will now be known as our beneficiaries and will continue to participate in our activities and schemes like before.

2. Appointment of Jackie Lee as Manager of BTSS

We have appointed Jackie Lee as our new Manager.  As a caregiver, Jackie joined our family in 2016.  She became a part of the committee in 2018 and would continue to serve the community as a staff from 10 July 2019. She replaces Angelene who will end her service with us on 9 July 2019.  We thank Angelene for her contributions to BTSS and look forward to welcoming her back as our volunteer.

3. Transition to virtual office

To reduce the operational costs, we will be moving out of the physical office from 10 July 2019.  We would operate as a virtual office.  Contact number and email addresses will stay the same as follows:

BTSS Mobile: 8738 5669
Office Email: admin@braintumoursociety.org.sg

4. Monthly Pledges

The funds raised by our sponsors are mostly for beneficiary spending. As such, we cannot use these to support our day to day office operations. BTSS EXCO and committee members are all volunteers with full time jobs and we need the support of a qualified resource, as well as, working capital to pursue all the work related to our corporate entity and beneficiaries. If everyone in the BTSS community will give even a small sum monthly to support the work BTSS is doing, we will be able to stabilize our cash flow and move on from survival issues to focus on building our entity to serve our brain tumour community better.  Please consider this appeal as a way you can contribute to the work BTSS is doing and aspires to do.  You may find pledging details in the flyer below.

5. New bank account

We have opened a new banking account with Maybank.  The details are as follow:
Account Name : Brain Tumour Society (Singapore) Limited

Account Number : 04181070878

Please use the new name and account number if you wish to donate to us on a one time basis for our operations.
Feel free to reach us on 8738-5669 or admin@braintumoursociety.org.sg if you have any questions.

Stay Positive and Live Strong

Melissa Lim
President, Brain Tumour Society (Singapore)
